Fire Safety

The Rutgers New Brunswick/Piscataway Emergency Services Fire Safety Bureau maintains all fire safety equipment throughout the university. The Fire Safety Bureau has over 20 trained and certified fire inspectors. Most are volunteer fire fighters within their home communities and have over 5 years experience in fire safety. We work continually to maintain a community well prepared for fire prevention and response to insure the safety of all. The Fire Safety Bureau is further divided into three bureaus staffing trained specialists that focus exclusively on their areas of expertise.

Fire Safety Bureaus

Fire Alarm Bureau
Licensed Fire Alarm Technicians inspect and test all fire alarm systems on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus to ensure that the fire alarm systems are in good working order at all times. All fire alarm systems within the university are electronically monitored by the Public Safety Communications & Dispatch Center. University and New Jersey Fire Safety Regulations require that occupants must immediately evacuate a building when a fire alarm is sounding. Occupants should not re-enter the building until cleared by the emergency responders.

Fire Sprinkler Bureau
Certified Fire Sprinkler Technicians inspect and test all fire sprinkler systems on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus to ensure that the fire sprinkler systems are in good working order at all times. All fire sprinkler systems within the university are electronically monitored by the Public Safety Communications & Dispatch Center.

Fire Inspections Bureau
New Jersey State Certified Fire Inspectors conduct code-enforced inspections in all Rutgers University facilities statewide and order the correction of any violations to assure compliance with the provisions of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code as well as University Fire Safety Regulations. All university buildings are inspected for compliance at a minimum of once per year. Buildings containing large occupancies or other hazardous uses are inspected on a quarterly basis. In addition, special event inspections are performed on a regular basis at all large venue events. To request an extension, please complete this form and fax to the Fire Safety Bureau.

Fire Protection System Impairments

Construction to a building may accidentally activate the alarms and/or sprinklers, and generate a signal for a response team to be dispatched. Accidental alarms cause a strain on emergency responders and inconvenience building occupants. Prior to all construction that may impact the fire protection systems the Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Bureaus must be contacted to schedule impairments. Failure to contact the Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Bureaus will result in enforcement action if the fire alarms or sprinklers are activated.

Residence Halls Fire Alarm and Sprinkler System

Rutgers University is deeply committed to fire safety and has demonstrated this by installing new sprinkler systems in all of the Residence Halls built before 1988 and mandating that any new buildings have alarm and sprinkler systems included. In 1989, the Resident Hall Fire Safety Improvement Program commenced to increase fire safety awareness through education and prevention and the installation of improved fire detection and suppression equipment. All residence halls have recently been upgraded and currently maintain full sprinkler systems and fire alarm systems.
