Rutgers Public Safety Rutgers University
Defensive Driving

Rutgers Emergency Services offers the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course enabling students, faculty, and staff members to meet the University requirement to operate a University owned, leased or rented vehicle.  This course is available to non-members of the Rutgers community at a cost of $20.00 per student. Those affiliated with the University can attend free of charge.
Please bring a copy of your Driver License to class.
If operating a University owned, leased or rented vehicle you will be required to have completed a vision screening within the last six months.  One can be provided the day of the course for $15.00 per student.

Point Reduction Program
The Rutgers Defensive Driving Course may be utilized for the reduction of 2 points from driving records. Individuals with valid New Jersey driver licenses are eligible for the point reduction credit. The point reduction program applies to Division of Motor Vehicle points only, not to insurance points. Individuals who participated in a point reduction course within the last five (5) years are ineligible for further point reduction credit. There is a non-refundable fee of $35.00 for processing. This fee is the responsibility of the employee, not the University department. This fee must be paid in cash or by check on the day of the course.

Insurance Premium Reduction
This course also entitles participants to a minimum 5% discount on their automobile insurance premium, for three years, at the time of renewal. The discount does not apply if the driver has accumulated 4 points in the past year. A copy of the course certificate must be presented to the insurance company in order to receive the discount. The insurance carrier will verify course participation through the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles. There is a $15.00 non-refundable processing fee for the DMV notification. This fee must be paid by cash or check the day of the course. Please contact your insurance carrier for details
